This series is the first-ever French Netflix original series. It stars Gérard Depardieu, Benoît Magimel, Géraldine Pailhas, Nadia Fares, and Stéphane Caillard. There are 2 seasons available on Netflix. It is a political drama, and tells the story of the current Maire of Marseilles, Robert Taro, getting into a war of succession with his former protégé Lucas Barres.

2. Mafiosa

This Canal+ drama series has 8 seasons so if you like it, you can dedicate tons of hours binge-watching this show. The Corsican mafia boss, François Paoli, gets murdered and his niece, Sandra Paoli, a lawyer, is thrust into being the mafia boss. This series is apparently based on the real life of the Corsican widow Sandra Casanova-Germani, and her brother Jean-Luc Germani who was once the most wanted man in France.

3. Les filles de Caleb

Les filles de Caleb is a Quebec television show based on Arlette Cousture’s novel. Vincent Bolduc, Marina Orsini, Germain Houde and Roy Dupuis tell the story of a young girl, Émilie, who decides to pursue her education and become a grade-school teacher against her family’s wishes. She falls in love with one of her students, Ovila Pronovost, and has to choose between her love for him and her love for teaching.

4. Omertà

This French tv series is from Québec and is another series about the mafia but this time, it’s the policemen’s side you watch. It is set in Montreal and tells the story of the struggle between the police and the mafia. This series was extremely popular. If you are a fan of the popular HBO series The Sopranos, you will greatly enjoy this show.

5. Un gars, une fille

This television show is another hit from Quebec. It was such a great success that France adapted it in their lexicon with Jean Dujardin and Alexandra Lamy. This chronicles the simple life of a married man and wife, and the daily little problems they have to go through as a couple. They do very mundane things like go to the grocery store, have friends over, go on a trip. Anyone who watches this show will be able to relate to these hilarious characters.

6. Dix pour cent

Dix pour cent is a French television show broadcasted on France 2. It stars Camille Cottin, Liliane Rovère, Thibault de Montalembert, Grégory Montel, Stéfi Celma, Fanny Sidney, Nicolas Maury, and Laure Calamy. The agents from a talent agency struggle coping with the loss of the agency’s founder. These movie-star agents have to deal with the world of celebrities, drama, and problems of the rich and famous! This show proves that French tv series can be great!

7. La trêve

This Belgian crime drama series chronicles the work of the police detective, Yoann Peeters, who moves back to his hometown from Brussels with his daughter. The town has been preoccupied with the sudden death of a young African football (soccer) player found in the river. Most people think it is a suicide but not Peeters. If you liked the True Detective series on HBO, you are sure to like this Belgian dramatic series.

8. Marianne

Finally, if you’re into horror movies and if you binge watched The Haunting of Hill House, you might like this original French Netflix show. It’s about a young novelist, Emma, who realizes that the characters she writes in her horror novels are appearing in the real world.
